There are 14 National Parks in New Zealand, 4 in the North Island, 10 in the South Island with 4 having world heritage status. Our population is just over 4 million with a land mass slightly larger than the United Kingdom, New Zealand is on the 45th parallel in the South Pacific and is a mere 3hr flight from Australia. The North Island of New Zealand is less mountainous than the South Island and has active volcanoes, thermal areas and lush green pastures dotted with dairy cattle, sheep and deer and interspersed with many fine wineries.New Zealand's Native forests of podacarp and beech are found throughout the country. The podacarps, like the Kauri forests of the far north are established in lowland areas, while the native beech forests are better adapted to colder areas and occupy vast areas of the Southern Alps. The highest point ‘Aoraki’ Mount Cook is 3754m and 18 peaks are over 3000m, snow-capped all year with numerous glaciers the source of many braided rivers that are excellent for kayaking, white water rafting and jet boating.
